A Superb Companion for just the Best Night Out in Tropical Bali

Share
The Rich fertile Lands around Mount Agung
I have over recent weeks covered a number of excursions, Bali Private villas, events and activities. What I haven’t covered is the cuisine and dining experience, although I did cover dining at the Warung Neris an Ubud street restaurant.
You may have heard that alcohol can be expensive here on Bali and yes it can if you are heading for the fancy drinks and cocktails, but you know those drinks are expensive in fancy establishments the world over, and they often have little of the spirits that their titles bill them for..

Fear not for here on Bali you can have a fine dining experience without feeling ripped off by the bottle cost of a good wine.  Bali has a great wine growing region all of its own which is situated in the northern areas of Bali around Singaraja an area which is known for its lush tropical climate.  Hattens have over 14.5 Hectares of vineyards and are able to produce eight excellent quality wines.  The grapes are from the Muscat family of grapes and are known as Propolingo Biru, Alphonse-Lavalle and Belgia.
Apparently these grapes are of excellent temperament which makes them ideal for the Balinese climate and easily enjoyed from a Bali Private Villa.  The goodness of the grapes can be harvested all year round as they are replenished every 120 days due to the tropical nature of the Bali climate.  The flavours of these wines are of excellent quality, as with all fine wines they can be discussed utilising all of the superfluities reserved for the wines of France, spicy, rich, full bodied etc..  However, these wines not only benefit from the tropical Bali climate, they are produced from the grapes that are harvested from the foot hills of the volcanic mountains of Bali, for these grapes thrive in the mineral rich volcanic soils that are fed by the fresh cool mountain springs, they are nurtured and cared for in ways that you would not expect.  These vineyards live in the shadows of small trees, which are regularly prune to allow just the appropriate protection for the grapes as they mature on the vines of this vineyard. The trees not only form an artificial shadow over the vines protecting the grape from Bali sunburn, they also provide the trellis or pergola over which the grapes form and cling too.  It should also be said that the pergola effect from these trees protects the picker from the intense Bali sunshine.  Bali Private Villas gardens are often planted in such a way to protect the occupants as they holiday here.

Hattens is not a new company as it was established in the mid 20thC by the current Owner I B Rai Budarsa.  IB Rai Budarsa has a degree in agricultural engineering and is involved with all operational aspects of Hatten Wines as even today he oversees the wine making. However, the Managing Director is also a long term veteran of the art of producing wine Don Buchanan whose knowledge, experience and education stretches back many years to that of the many regions of southern Australia, he too is no slouch when it comes to wine pedigree.

I have lifted this next paragraph from their Bali website as it covers the excellent facilities that they have in which to ensure a high quality wine process:

“The winery is located close to the main business centre in Sanur Bali and is fitted out in stainless steel to maintain cleanliness.  The winery has a horizontal press, 16 large wine tanks, fermenters, a bottling room, and a laboratory.  The winery has the capacity of bottling 5000 per day.”  A superb establishment and one worthy of the many awards that it has received, a quality producer of such distinguished brands and flavours.
So for a sparkling white, a rich red or a cooling white, pick up a Hattens next time you’re out,  for these wines are another of Bali’s many secrets yet to be enjoyed.

This collection fine wines can be enjoyed from the comfort of your very own villa booked through the pages of  Bali Private villas http://www.bookingvillasinbali.com/

More to see, more to do, more to experience and even easier to plan

If you like what you read here please can I ask the that you Google +1 so that others can appreciate the traditions of Bali - Many thanks

Ogoh Ogoh a real art form
Bali Private Villas - A break from tradition as it is Nyepi day or better known as 'Silent Day' which follows a parade of Ogoh Ogoh which is a sort of festival here on Bali. The Balinese gather in their villages and towns from all over. Ogoh-ogoh, in short is a gruesome mythological being, a kind of devil which is depicted by larger than life sized paper-machete statues. These figures are colourfully painted and then paraded along the streets and villages of Bali. The Ogoh Ogoh are based on the Balinese interpretation of Hinduism, the creation of Ogoh-ogoh represents the spiritual aims and is inspired by Hindu philosophy.

Regardless of their origins they are a fantastic display of the Bali skills and local culture as these are impressive sculptures by some very talented people. The sculptures, after the parade are then taken away and burnt to symbolize the overwhelming of the devil. The whole of Bali during the parade takes on a carnival feel, worth seeing whilst staying at a Bali Private Villas, I have to say.

Ogoh Ogoh on the eve of Nyepi day
Silent day well that is an experience I am waiting to appreciate and will no doubt consider a blog on this subject as I sit in my Bali Private Villas. However, I would say that the concept from a spiritual cleansing perspective has to be worth a merit badge of some description. I am suitably armed with a number of DVD’s should boredom step in.

Meanwhile I would again like to bestow the virtues of this great place and encourage a visit here to one of our Bali Private Villas as soon as possible. The reason I say this is simple: Bali offers great value, but overtime and if the press is to be believed Bali will become more expensive, the middle classes are growing across the whole of Indonesia. I have for a long time bestowed the virtues of Indonesia and its progress towards a true economic super power, I see no let up in this progress and all power to them. To add further confirmation of this I read this week the transcript of an article by Ian Satchwell, Australia Indonesia Business Council - an article that I will post a link to here and quote from an ABC interview:
ABC Interview Ian Satchwell
“IAN SATCHWELL: Well the Indonesian economy, yes, you're right, is growing and indeed it will be quite a bit bigger than Australia within a decade. The Indonesian market of 240 million people heading for 250 million, rapidly becoming wealthier, a lot of people moving into the middle class, is a fantastic consumer market”.

So to say that Bali and Bali Private Villas will be the major focus of middle class Indonesians is perhaps an understatement, this place is an idyllic location for the aspirations of so many Indonesians. I have lived and occasionally worked in Indonesia for the last 16 years and I can say that so many consider Bali as the place that they would most like to live and holiday in. Couple this desire with real money in their pockets then you have a very mobile population that will bless these beautiful shores.

I am going to break from tradition here by incorporating third party links, I have tried to make my blogs interesting, informative but above all useful. On that note I came across a great site this week called Seat Guru one that helps you plan an air trip from any port to anywhere in the world. It is a site that shows the configuration of every airline flying today. You can with the aid of this planner identify and book your seat in advance of your trip. If you are over 6ft then leg room by an exit is a good place to go. If you like your seat back for most of the flight then perhaps a rear seat against a bulk head would be good. Whatever your reason this site gives you an insight as to how the plane is configured which makes you just a little more informed during your planning process.

Seat Guru
Of course given the nature of my post, again highlighting the growth in wealth of the Indonesians add to this the explosive growth in wealth out of China and India then it is my strong belief that Bali and Bali Private Villas will not be able to cope with the growth in tourism over the coming years. As with all market economies then this paradise on earth will no doubt succumb to market forces, so jump on seat guru plan your trip and visit Bali this year.

A Bali Pandawa tale of intrigue, fortitude and incredible skill another opportunity to wonder at this great place

Share

A Bali Private Villa - Underground
Bali Private Villas - This is a tale of intrigue, of incredible fortitude, amazing logistics, performed with incredible skill.  It is a tale of a man inspired by Hindu scripture, a tale of a Hindu priest, a dancer, a philosopher.  Furthermore it is a tale of man fascinated with the suffering of the Pandawas (Pandawa is the name given to the collection of Bali Private Villas located in Sanur), with Gambling, cheating and rivalry borne out of sinful behaviours.  For this is a man that can through graphical portrayal immortalise the Hindu calendar, bringing sense to the Gregorian calendar through graphical images.  For this is a man who constructed perhaps the world’s first ecological habitat and he did this in the course of 15 years only completing the task at the grand age of 75.  For this man was a true visionary perhaps, paranoid maybe, but a genius most certainly.

I promised an exploration of Bali as well as details of the many exclusive Bali Private Villas and that I shall deliver, for today I will take you on a journey which starts from the port of Benoa. just a tad south of Sanur. Benoa is the port of Bali where the majority of Bali's comings and goings emanate from.  Today we took the good ship Bounty across to the island of Nusa Lembongan. The trip was billed as a mini cruise, the Bounty is a large yellow catamaran type that you can easily find being used as a fast ferry, it has 3 decks, two of which are covered and have a small sun deck to the rear, the third deck has shade but is predominantly open to the air.  It is a fun ship if you like, one that will take you on a journey to a tropical sport inspired fun packed day, this is a trip that will exercise all of your senses physically as well as spiritually, one that requires you to be alert to all the magic of the Balinese province of which Nusa Lembongan is part of.  This part of Bali whilst being part of the overall Indonesian archipelago remains staunchly Hindu in its belief and spiritual customs. Customs which have formed the stylish decor of many of the Bali Private Villas.

The Good Ship Bounty
As you arrive off shore to the small enclave of Nusa Lembongan, the Bounty navigates to its mooring station, an off shore jetty of incredible proportions,  for this jetty is no ordinary jetty.  The jetty sits alone in the Indian ocean about 100Metres from the shore line, it is parked like a small man-made island, an off shore theme park of amazing size and configuration.  This Jetty is a haven of fun, packed full of experiences as it has amazing proportions, it has pontoons, a restaurant, a natural pool, it has a water chute, a high rise diving platform.  It has further jetty's in which to canoe from, to banana boat ride, and to connect with glass bottom boats or to reach out to an off shore diving platform which will anchor just overhead an amazing coral reef.  For here you are provided with a snorkel mask and flippers so that you can snorkel and enjoy all the vibrant colours that these tropical seas have to offer, you do this right overhead a coral reef so you are sure of a festival of colour beneath your very person.  For the more serious the good ship bounty will provide an air cylinder, together with a support vest for the deeper encounter along this coral reef.  I should add at this juncture that the whole experience is expertly supervised with dive areas marked and perimeters set.

A Veritable Funpark
At a time convenient to you a banquet awaits you back on your own tin Island which is equipped with the rudimentary facilities of any of the Bali Private Villas, floating out at sea.  As you finish lunch you are then allowed to venture towards the island itself and here you are, like so many places on Bali, greeted with the mysteries of a bygone era and historic customs that have been bestowed on these people by their gods.

The beach is of white golden sands suitable for a perfect bask in the tropical sunshine; the seas are warm and amazingly clear.  As you depart what appear to be a wartime landing craft exiting straight onto the beach of Nusa Lembongan from the front of the craft.  Here you make your way to several waiting old tin Mitsubishi vans of some serious age on their side, they even had what I would call stick shift.  For these trucks are there to take you to the Gala Gala house.

First a little about the Gala Gala Inspiration which inspired the visionary Pak Made Byasa For this Gala Gala was created from the story of the Pandawa which in part is not unlike a Hindu Kane and Able for this is a story of the Pandawa and Kauravas,.

The Pandawa 5
The Pandawa were brothers (Yudhisthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva - names of individula villas in the Bali Private Villa collection situated in Sanur) born of royal stock had it not been for the self imposed exile of their father due to an accident which killed the royal sage and his wife.  The five brothers in total, although there was a 6th son who was brought up by their uncle, this son was Karna born the first child of Pandu.  Pandu handed off his son to his brother as he forced himself into exile. The five were born after their fathers exile and lived in blissful ignorance of the existence of their older sibling.  The brothers, whilst the sons of Pandu they were born of his two wives Kunti and Madri.  After the untimely death of Pandu,  Kunti brought the Pandawas back to the kingdom Hastinapura, where as children, the Pandawas and their royal cousins the Kauravas often played together.

Bhima a Pandawa was always at loggerheads with the Kauravas, particularly the cousin known as Duryodhana who was of insecure disposition, jealous of nature and easily manipulated by his maternal uncle.  Duryodhana refused to accept the Pandawas as being of his bloodline and felt that they were a threat to the Khuru dynasty, he only had hatred for the five brothers and plotted with the support of his uncle Shakuni to kill them to be sure of his clear path to the lordship of the Kuru Dynasty.  Over time this fostered a fierce rivalry between the two clans so much so that a great war flourished between them, a war which came to be known as the Battle of Kurukshetra.  As part of this battle the brothers five unknowingly fought their oldest brother Karna, prevailing in the battle.

Not an Exclusive Villa but Cool Nonetheless
A sort of cohabitation was created by a partition of land with the barren worthless parts of the kingdom given to the 5 brothers who then made a great success of their inheritance.  However, they were duped by trickery through the art of loaded dice losing all of their land to the cousins forcing them once again into exile, living in hiding in the forests around the kingdom, they constructed caves in which to hide, forming  a base in which to plot their return by force if need be.

For it is this story that Pak Made Byasa used as a reason to embark on a hidden life for he spent 15 years constructing a series of underground caves using only a hammer and chisel, he built a living area, dining, kitchen, two bedrooms, a well which provided a constant stream of water, a bathroom and a meditation chamber, his own unique Bali Private Villa.  The construction took 15 years to conclude where there is a cave carving or relief that indicates the completion of the cave, for here he carved symbols of an elephant, gate and turtle which in the Hindu calendar (Tahun Caka) has the following meaning - human: 1, elephant: 8, gate: 9, turtle: 8. When combined this is 1898, which is the Hindu calendar year of 1976.

These caves are in existence today and can with your guide be explored to your hearts content.

The world we live - I am so confused could the little people be rising up

All at sea in a troubled world Picture from The Leading Villas Bali
I am so confused, so much so that I am agog at the world as we have it today, what has happened that has caused so many contrasts in behaviour?

We have a US army troop sneaking out of his barracks late one night, he is armed to the teeth and commits the most heinous crimes against humanity, actions that beggar belief!  What on earth possessed him to do this? Could it be the Afghan people in general have not seen the ‘American dream’ or any shift in the power to the people that they expected after their liberation from the Taliban.  No doubt what they have seen is a corrupt government propped up by the so called American liberators.  Where is democracy in all of this, where was the change for the good?  No doubt the women folk have felt their release from oppression, but how far do they have to go to get true democracy and not this sham of a puppet government.  My suspicion in all of this is that the afghan people have not shown due respect to the American and probably will not do this until they get free and fair elections and that they remove those allegedly corrupt greedy individuals who are running their country..

I am also shocked and horrified, on one hand we have Syria and its authoritarian government hell bent on staying in power at all costs, to the point that they have murdered allegedly 8,000 of their citizens, this is shocking.  A question comes to mind - How is it we have carte blanch to defend Libya with air strikes, on the ground military guidance, yet we are completely powerless in the Syria situation?  How is it that Russia and China raised their objections here and vetoed any support or assistance, yet, they allowed Libya to go ahead?  Sorry but I am a cynic, could it be oil in which case back door deals were done with dissenting nations to ensure their support for any crucial vote of Libya intervention.  Syria has no oil so no one had any heart to negotiate with a give or take deal.  On behalf of the 8,000 shame on all of you.

What happened to 'love thy neighbour'
Why after we gave so much to Libya to support their freedom and democracy aspirations have they turned on us and desecrated our war graves? The world is a complete muddle to me and continuing to be.  We seem to have learned nothing from their or indeed our behaviour. The people of this world know that no one helps anybody without their being something in it for them and we are the most greedy of all, in short no one cares, what happened to love thy neighbour?

When I was a lad some 40 years ago someone once said to me that for Capitalism to survive it needed Communism. Well I am not sure about the ramifications of that statement but you know the world was a much more balanced place when we had the so called evil empire with all its partitions.  It seemed to me that no one stepped out of line then and we all enjoyed a reasonable existences and one that was based on a form of community and not selfish greed.

What we had was an America that indeed supported nations across the globe for fear that these nations would fall to the communists.  But here again we had the conflict of manipulation verses friendly support, Indonesia under Suharto was no doubt kept in place as the west needed the shipping lanes free from harm around South East Asia.  No doubt the shah of Iran was at one point friendly to the west, until he crossed us.  Iraq and Saddam was kept in place as they balanced the aspirations of Iran.  No doubt people have long memories and when the next empire emerges and the American subsides will there be fond memories of the so called globalization goals under the American flag.  I suspect not.  The British gave the English Language, an Infra-structure and the rule of law based on the English judicial system.  America well the best they gave was McDonald’s, this is perhaps harsh as America is a great innovator and a great deal of technology has emerged from those shore, sadly for America I suspect much of this is being copied.

For me I am a Thatcher child I guess, I benefited from the greed that was presented to me under the Thatcher years. But I am somewhat older now and I wonder where this will all lead, I have to say I am a little concerned because sadly the world does not trust each other and we have nothing to build that trust on.  Right now I feel that the world is a more dangerous place today than ever it was when there were 100’s of nuclear missiles trained on Greenham common England, a place I lived only 2 miles from.

Don't get me wrong I am not at all anti American quite the reverse nor am I pro anything other than I would like to see the civil liberties that are enjoyed in one place to be passed to others.  I would also like to see a greater sense of community spirit, one that helps and looks out for each other, not this endless greed that we seem to have fostered in an unbridled way.  We somehow need balance and trust to be brought back into the equation.

One thought – It was Dr M of Malaysia who once said “Globalisation will fail”  Well for me it looks really shaky.

A serene sanctuary just one of many on Bali
Meanwhile to leave you on a happy note; take heart as we still have Bali and Bali Private Rental Villas, Bali is a tranquil island that still offers a serene Hindu calm in a chaotic world.  For here you will enjoy and be equipped with everything you need to rejuvenate during a well earned break.
